fit the line

you are the regression. the computer will judge you.

a regression line is the straight line that best predicts y from x for a cloud of points. drag the two white handles to place yours. each faint red line is a residual: how far one point misses your line, measured straight up or down. square every residual and add them up. that total is your ssr (sum of squared residuals), and lower is better.

round 1 / 5
your ssr: 0.00

the method of least squares. gauss had it by 18, and at 24 he used it to predict where the asteroid ceres would reappear after it vanished behind the sun. he was right.
